Body Diversity | Mercedes Benz Fashion-Week 2017

African Fashion International SA

Body diversity like you have never seen it before, at the 2017 Mercedes Benz Fashion-Week

We are always crucifying the fashion industry for not representing enough of the different sizes and silhouettes that women have. As Curve Loving, we strongly believe in the representation of “real” women in the media. The “Real” that we speak of is that of authenticity. Short, tall, light dark, fat thin, curvy. The all-round perfectly imperfect Curve Loving woman that each of us can identify with.

Hello, Women’s Month #SONKE

When August 19th hit and the runway was glammed up with BeYOUtiful Curve Loving women we were in awe. You can imagine our excitement was through the roof when there was ample body diversity on the Mercedes Benz Fashion-Week ramp.

From labels Khosi Nkosi to Ruff Tung it was great to see a great amount of Body Diversity on the ramp. Fashion does not belong to a single body type, seeing diversity on one of fashion’s biggest ramps is definitely validating.

New brand Ruff Tung came into the fashion week with a bang. Speaking to Sunday times Designer Bridget Pickering had this to say “With the launch of our Ruff Tung Inclusive Collection our models range from 32-42 on the runway. The industry models for fashion week are generally a size 32‚ so we have brought in our own team ranging from 34‚ 36‚ 38‚ 40 and 42‚”

There are many brands on the market that cater for a wide range of sizes that we love. Having them represented on the one of SA’s biggest ramps really announces the cherry on top.

This is what former Miss Teen South Africa Zizo Tshwete who walked for Khosi Nkosi had to say. “What I loved the most about the Khosi Nkosi show is how they showcased and celebrated a TRUE narrative of our country‚ our culture‚ our real figures! There were black‚ white‚ coloured‚ tall‚ short‚ petite‚ curvy ladies on that runway. The audience cheered us ALL on! These are the positive messages we need to be sharing with the talents that we have been given!“

The mould is widening

We look forward to seeing more and more diversity on various platforms. The mould should not only widen but must be broken.
