Mirror Mirror On The Wall

I came across the song mirror late 2016 when Onke Dumeko introduced it to me at the first ever Curve Corner. Since then the song has become somewhat of a morning ritual. In the song, Grammy-winning singer Lalah Hathaway lets us in on self-reflection that looks deep into her soul.

This is the type of song that we can all relate to, it reminds me of the saying “if you want something done right, do it yourself”. Every now and again you need to sit down with self and do some reflection and remember not only who you are but also how important and valuable you are. You need to become your biggest cheerleader just as verse 3 prescribes:

Now you know the remedy, Tell yourself you will achieve, Just go on and brush your shoulders off, This bridge is one that you must cross , You have to find a way to make it, These clouds are letting up for awhile

Lalah, sat down with ESSENCE to talk more about the song and had this to say:

#stophidingyourself I am a great hider. It is a blessing and a curse. I know how to hide in plain sight, in any number of ways. For the most part, we all know what we have to face up to, but facing our own reality, our own truth can feel impossible. We are both our own poison and our own antidote. It’s kinda bulls–t when you think about it! The fact that I now realize that I have been cruising through life, thinking I had an understanding of how people “hide themselves” is really funny to me, and a bit disconcerting. In reality, I am just starting to learn…

I understand that I do keep a part of myself hidden. This is a response to many things, not the least of which is ignoring my own voice and instincts. When I first decided to loc my hair, I was warned against it. They told me it was a bad marketing idea. “How will people relate to you with dry, nappy hair?” I clearly understand now that I am a beautiful woman and I do not need to fit into anyone else’s paradigm of beauty because really, the only person I need to feel beautiful for is me. It’s sad how few of us genuinely believe that. There is nothing truer to know.

We have included the video and lyrics below, have a listen and let us know what your thoughts are.

Lyrics

Bitter hearts don’t hold a smile
Troubled minds will wear you down
Use your past to get ahead
Hold your tears and think instead
You have to find a way to make it
These clouds are letting up for awhile

Sometimes you gotta make the mirror your best friend
Maybe then, you’ll find some peace within
Stop hiding yourself, stop hiding yourself
Love yourself
When no one else can

Now you know the remedy
Tell yourself you will achieve
Just go on and brush your shoulders off
This bridge is one that you must cross
You have to find a way to make it
These clouds are letting up for awhile

Sometimes you gotta make the mirror your best friend
Maybe then, you’ll find some peace within
Stop hiding yourself, stop hiding yourself
Love yourself
When no one else can

If you love yourself, you don’t need nobody else
(Don’t need nobody else)
No one can love you like you
If you look inside, (look inside)
You’ll find where your strength resides
No one can love you like you

Sometimes you gotta make the mirror your best friend
And maybe then, you’ll find some peace within
Stop hiding yourself, stop hiding yourself
Love yourself
When no one else can

Stop hiding yourself, stop hiding yourself
Love yourself
When no one else can

Stop hiding yourself, stop hiding yourself
Love yourself
When no one else can

Looking at the mirror now and realizing how God was Creative when He created Me.
